Kuala Lumpur October 2024 "Is this a sign?"

A couple of weeks ago I noticed food had started to get caught in my teeth and when I flossed them a sharp edge on one of my teeth would rip the tape. I guessed that a filling must have broken or come loose so a visit to the dentist was arranged. No one likes going to the dentist and I am no exception to this rule. My dentist in Malaysia doesn't use injections to numb the pain from a filling so you just have to hope it won't be a big one. The other disincentive is that there is nowhere to park or rather there will be nowhere to park because the road outside his surgery is very busy. Just a few doors away from there is one of the most popular restaurants in KL so the chance of finding an empty car parking space in this road is next to none. Anyway my appointment is an hour before lunchtime so let's not be too negative before we get there. As we turn into the road it is as I expected, 200m of solid cars and many of them are double parked. My destination is 100m down the road and as we look for somewhere to park we find that right outside that building is an empty car parking space. Let me say that again, there is an empty space and it is quite probably the only one in that road. We park the car and I pay for a two hour stay which I figure should be sufficient time. If we had been 30s later arriving there then that space would have been filled by someone else, the road is that busy. As for the dental treatment it went well, the tooth had lost its filling and a new one was inserted without pain or discomfort.

For lunch we decided to go to a nearby Indian restaurant. I couldn't eat hard food because of the new filling so I ordered soft food and avoided eating on that side of the mouth. It was a nice meal but we now had another problem, rain. A thunderstorm had been forecast for that afternoon and now it had arrived. I hoped it wouldn't last long so we ordered a few more drinks and snacks and waited. After an hour my patience had run out. The rain was getting worse and I asked if I could borrow an umbrella and see if I could get back to where we had parked the car. They were kind enough to lend me one but as I set off immediately lightning struck nearby. Despite being surrounded by buildings any thought of putting up an umbrella and walking 200m to where the car was parked was probably inviting trouble. After another two minutes I decided I couldn't wait and stepped out into the rain whilst asking the Lord for some help with this. I hadn't walked more than 50m before the rain started to ease off and by the time I had got to the car it had stopped. I drove to the restaurant to return their umbrella and pick up my wife who was also surprised by how quickly the rain had stopped. Then, as we drove home, it started again!

It hasn't gone unnoticed to us that we are remarkably lucky in finding car parking spaces and avoiding the rain when it matters. It is important to say there are many times we go shopping and find there are no car parking spaces and likewise we get caught in the rain and have to shelter but those are irritations and not a major problem. Then there will be occasions when we just find a car parking space or the rain stops by chance. These blog entries are written about those times when 'chance' happens to coincide with it being really important to me.
