Kuala Lumpur December 2025 "Keeping dry"

I've shared many stories about how rain stops or starts just in time to avoid me getting soaked. It happens so often that my family jokes about it but we are grateful when it happens. Only last week we were in having lunch in Penang when the skies opened and the rains came down. That's OK I thought (and prayed) as by the time we have finished eating it will have stopped and indeed that was exactly what happened. We walked out to the taxi probably less than a minute after the rain had ceased and I am grateful for that. This story is a little different.

My family is visiting us in Kuala Lumpur and have gone out to eat at the local shops. We are at home and waiting for the phone call to pick them up and then it starts to rain. Now I'm sure I have said before, it usually doesn't matter whether I get rained on or not. Rain is not really a problem, our coats or jackets get wet and that is why we wear them. Sometimes it is important that doesn't happen and that is the only time I pray for rain to cease. Today's rain was one of those occasions. I set off in the car and immediately the rain turns into a tropical downpour. We have only a few km to drive, less than ten minutes, before picking them up and this rain might cease by then however it wasn't looking that way. I knew my family would have to walk out of the shop and cross the pavement to get to the car and that short walk would get them soaked. As I drove my mind pondered on whether that mattered. The rain was very heavy, it did, so I prayed for them "not to get wet". I assumed the rain would have become light drizzle by the time we got there but no, it was still as intense as ever. It looked like we would be parked outside the shop and blocking the road for several minutes before they could get to it without a major problem however what happens next is why this becomes a story in my blog.

They are at a corner shop and my wife directs me to turn down a short side road. As I do so I notice that there is a canopy covering the pavement and part of the road. I guess that is for the motorbikes to park under to avoid the rain but there are none there today. I realise my car is small enough so that half of it can fit under the canopy! I drive up to the pavement edge and one side of the car is now out of the rain. My family walk over and get in, completely dry and I am able to reverse back out onto the main road without a problem as there are few other cars around in this weather. So as we drive off to our next destination I start to think over what had just happened. I am pleased that all went well, we are dry but it hadn't stopped raining. Then a thought entered my mind, "You asked for your family not to get wet ,didn't you?" I smiled and said "Thank you".
